Letting Go vs. Openness

Perspective is everything, especially when working with our own spirituality. We are driven to unfold, blossom, and become the best soul we can be – so this requires deep introspection, which inevitably forces us to examine much about how we are perceiving ourselves in relation to reality and in which the way language structures our thoughts.

All of us know that to expand our consciousness, we have to put behind us those things which keep us imprisoned in terms of who we believe ourselves to be versus who we would like to become. In a classical use of affirmations, you may say to yourself, “I am letting go.”  And possibly repeat that affirmation multiple times.  “Letting go. Letting go. Letting go.”

However, is this really what you’re after?

You might be now be going, “Huh? What’s he talking about?”  Bear with me on this.

What if your affirmation changed from “I am letting go,” to “I am open.”

You see, to me, “letting go” forces a different angle of perception within our awareness than it does the latter.  When you focus on “letting go,” you are affirming that you are having blockages or things that are tripping you up.  In constantly saying, “I am letting go,” you are also constantly affirming there is something to let go of.  Again, reinforcement that there is something within in that is not wanted, keeping such unwanted material alive.

Contrast that with “I am open.”  You will notice that there is absolutely no affirmation of anything holding you back or that you must let go of.  Now, there might be those things still within, but by not acknowledging them in the same way as saying, “I am letting go,” you are not giving these little hurdles any power to maintain obstruction, and thus redirecting that energy where it needs to be: the intention of openness.

To truly foster openness and develop it, you must see yourself inside your own awareness as moving, vibrating, and verb-ing in that state.  By being open, you are inviting to the Universe an allowance of its wonder, magic, wealth, and wisdom.  In “letting go,” the focus is still too close to the self and is not quite available to receive, for the affirmation is still too strong in reinforcement of some kind of blockage.  The argument could be made that by affirming “I am open” you have signaled to your deeper self that such openness automatically lets go of what may hinder from springing up in the background.

I know a popular visualization over the years has been seeing your problems symbolically put into balloons and then visualize cutting the strings and having them float away.  The problem with this is that you still affirm the balloons.  And even though you might cut the strings, what we fail to realize is that other balloons inevitably take their place, for we are always on the lookout for “obstructions.”  Consciousness is an amalgamation of all possible states, including those we have labeled “bad” or “unwanted.” We are our own ying/yang circle of expression – and such is quite needed in order to truly blossom and grow.  Again, how we use language – which in turn directs how we think and perceive – will determine the nature of observation, experience, and reality.

You don’t necessarily have to “let go” of anything, you just have to be willing to “be open” for something different.

When it comes to my work as a psychic medium, this was a huge turning point in my development.  For years I was always looking to “let go” of things I felt were holding me back from receiving a better blend with the spirit communicators.  I didn’t necessarily know anything of something directly, such as “I need to let go of ‘this’ limiting thought,” I just knew I needed to let go of something. Which always kept my mind searching for whatever that elusive thing was.

All that shifted when I stopped and turned it around.  Instead of looking for something that could be blocking, I simply ignored that and said, “I am open for spirit’s messages.”  I cannot tell you the improvement I saw in just the first reading after affirming that over-and-over for just a couple of days. In other areas of my life, it has been equally remarkable.

So examine what you’re hoping to accomplish when expanding your consciousness, your awareness, and your spirituality.  What you say will determine how you perceive.  It is the key to unlocking your experiences.
